Friends of Ashton project update
Summer 2024
In 2023, the Incorporation provided a grant of £350 to the Friends of Ashton, to assist in their creation of a new garden to attract butterflies and other pollinators. Friends of Ashton supports projects at Ashton Secondary School, an additional needs school based in the east end of Glasgow with 190 pupils.
The Master Court was delighted to learn that the project had been successful, introducing vibrant colours to the school grounds and allowing children to learn more about nature and gardening. While wider work to create a pond and boost the local butterfly population is ongoing, the garden has attracted a variety of other pollinators to date.
Friends of Ashton commented:
"the sensory experiences of sight and smell have added wonders to the learning capabilities of our pupils, especially those with ASD. Touch and taste have given us an opportunity to develop life skills. Some 30% of our students now go to college, including Kelvin College, after leaving our school. And some get jobs and work experience in gardening centres."
